The 2026 midterm elections are scheduled to be held on November 3, 2026. This market will resolve to "California" if the regularly-scheduled gubernatorial race in California has a smaller unrounded margin of victory than that of the New York gubernatorial election. This market will resolve to "New York" if the regularly-scheduled gubernatorial race in New York has a smaller unrounded margin of victory than that of the California gubernatorial election. If both states have the same margin of victory, this market will resolve 50-50. For the purpose of this market, the “margin of victory” is defined as the absolute difference between the percentages of valid votes received by the first- and second-place candidates. Percentages of the valid votes received by each candidate will be determined by dividing the total number of valid votes each of the top two candidates receives by the sum of all valid votes cast in the election. For elections that include runoffs, ranked-choice, or other multi-round elections, the relevant margin of victory will be that of the round in which the winner is determined. In the event that a relevant margin of victory cannot be determined by March 31, 2027, that state's margin of victory will be considered to be 0% for purposes of this market. The resolution source for this market will be a compilation of all of the relevant state election authorities responsible for certifying statewide elections, however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.

Currently, prediction market odds suggest a different outlook than traditional polling data. While polls often focus on individual candidate preferences, this market asks a broader question about which state’s election will be more competitive. Polling averages may show a clear leader in each state, but this market reflects an assessment of the overall race dynamics, including factors like incumbency advantage, fundraising, and potential third-party candidates. It’s common to see discrepancies between prediction markets and polls, as markets incorporate a wider range of information and incentivize accurate forecasting.
On Polymarket, this market is priced using a continuous double auction, meaning traders can buy and sell shares representing their belief about the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market price reflects the collective wisdom of the crowd, and changes rapidly as new information becomes available. The current top outcome, as indicated by trader activity, has a chance percentage of 40.5%.
This market resolves around Nov 4, 2026, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. Specifically, the outcome will be determined by which state – California or New York – has a gubernatorial election with a smaller margin of victory in the general election. The margin of victory will be calculated as the percentage difference between the winning candidate’s vote share and the losing candidate’s vote share. The determination will be based on official election results reported by state election authorities.
Several factors could significantly influence this market before Nov 4, 2026. Major economic shifts in either state, unexpected candidate announcements, or significant changes in national political trends could all impact trader sentiment. Key events like primary election results, major debates, and high-profile endorsements will also be closely watched. Any news that alters perceptions of candidate strength, fundraising capabilities, or the overall competitiveness of either race has the potential to move the odds. Unexpected scandals or controversies involving candidates could also cause substantial shifts in this market.
