Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market allows anyone to express their view. Therefore, discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply variations in opinion. It's common to see prediction market probabilities diverge from sportsbook implied probabilities, especially as new information becomes available or public sentiment shifts closer to the event date. Analyzing these differences can offer valuable insights.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher perceived probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective assessment of the event's likelihood. The market's efficiency is driven by the incentive for traders to accurately predict the outcome and profit from their insights.
