Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set initial lines based on their own analysis, while this market allows anyone to trade on their beliefs, potentially leading to a more accurate assessment of probabilities. Discrepancies can arise due to differing levels of information, biases, or simply the dynamics of supply and demand within each venue. It’s common to see prediction markets react more quickly to new information than sportsbooks, as traders can instantly adjust their positions.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand among traders on Polymarket, and is not influenced by external factors or a central authority setting the odds.
