This market tracks whether OpenAI will announce a solution to any of the Clay Mathematics Institute’s Millennium Prize Problems by December 31, 2027. Currently, Polymarket gives a 42.5% probability to this outcome, with a 14.5% probability assigned to OpenAI announcing a solution by December 31, 2026. The resolution source for this market is the Clay Mathematics Institute’s official website at https://www.claymath.org/millennium-problems/. Keep an eye on any announcements from OpenAI regarding progress on these problems, particularly leading up to the end of the betting period on January 1, 2028, as that is when this market will be resolved.
This market will resolve to "Yes" if OpenAI, or an official representative of OpenAI, announces that OpenAI has solved any of the qualifying Millennium Prize Problems between market creation and the specified date, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No". The qualifying problems are the Riemann Hypothesis, P versus NP, the Yang-Mills existence and mass gap problem, the Hodge Conjecture, and the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture (https://www.claymath.org/millennium-problems/). Announcements concerning the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem will not qualify. A qualifying announcement must express that the problem has been solved; announcements of partial results or progress toward a solution will not qualify. The announcement must present the solution as the work of OpenAI, its researchers, or its models, alone or jointly with outside researchers. An announcement that only credits or congratulates outside researchers, including researchers who used OpenAI's models, compute, or research credits, will not qualify. No further confirmation from Clay Math Institute or any other organization is required. The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from OpenAI and/or its official representatives; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.
Currently, the prevailing sentiment in this market suggests a high probability of OpenAI announcing another Millennium Prize solution. This contrasts with some analyst forecasts, which express greater uncertainty regarding the timing and likelihood of such an announcement. While analysts rely on expert opinion and modeling, this market aggregates the wisdom of the crowd, reflecting a diverse range of perspectives and information. The difference between these viewpoints highlights the unique insights offered by prediction markets as a forecasting tool.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of the event occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price indicates the collective assessment of the likelihood that OpenAI will announce another Millennium Prize solution. As new information emerges, traders adjust their positions, causing the price to fluctuate and converge towards a consensus view.
This market resolves around Jan 1, 2028, with the outcome confirmed once the event is verifiable from credible public reporting. Resolution will depend on whether OpenAI publicly announces a solution to a Millennium Prize Problem before the resolution date. The announcement must be official and widely recognized by the scientific community to be considered valid. This market will then settle based on whether this condition is met, reflecting the collective prediction of traders.
Several signals or events could significantly impact this market. Any official statements from OpenAI regarding their research efforts, particularly those hinting at progress on Millennium Prize Problems, would likely cause a price shift. Major breakthroughs in relevant fields of mathematics or computer science could also influence trader sentiment. Unexpected delays or setbacks in OpenAI's research could move the market in the opposite direction. Monitoring these developments will be crucial for understanding the dynamics of this market.
