Prediction market odds often reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring a profit margin, while this market allows traders to directly assess probabilities. Often, prediction markets aggregate diverse information and can be more accurate than initial sportsbook lines, especially as new information emerges. However, sportsbook odds are readily accessible and may offer different value depending on individual risk tolerance and analytical approaches. Comparing the two can provide a more comprehensive understanding of the potential outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts to reflect the collective wisdom of the crowd. The market's price is determined solely by supply and demand for shares, creating a dynamic and real-time assessment of the event's potential results.
