Frequently, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. This can be due to the wisdom of the crowd effect, where the collective intelligence of many traders can lead to more accurate predictions. Sportsbooks often set initial lines to balance action, while this market reflects what traders are willing to pay for a particular outcome. It's common to see discrepancies, especially early in the market's life, as information becomes available and opinions shift. Comparing the two can be a useful exercise for informed decision-making.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. As more shares are bought for a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, with the platform ensuring that the total value of all shares sums to 1. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust expectations.
