Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of bettors, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market relies on the incentives of traders who have skin in the game. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially early in the market’s life, as prediction markets can incorporate information more quickly and efficiently. Examining these differences can provide valuable insights into public perception and potential value bets.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders believe a particular player will win, the higher the price of shares representing that outcome will climb.
