Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often differing from initial sportsbook offerings. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and ensure profit, while this market allows traders to openly express their beliefs about the probability of each player winning. If a significant number of traders believe a player has a better chance than implied by sportsbook odds, the price will move accordingly. It's common to see prediction markets outperform traditional sportsbooks in accuracy, especially as the event approaches and more information becomes available.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate, the market price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the event's likelihood. The volume traded provides insight into the strength of conviction behind each prediction, with higher volume generally indicating greater confidence.
