Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often incorporating information not immediately available to traditional sportsbooks. While sportsbooks set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, this market allows for real-time adjustments based on a broader range of factors and potentially insider information. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially as new information emerges or public sentiment changes. However, both aim to accurately predict the outcome, and comparing them can offer valuable insights into the perceived probabilities of each player winning.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as determined by supply and demand. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's liquidity and trading volume influence how quickly and efficiently the price adjusts to new information. The current implied probability of a specific outcome is visible on the dashboard, providing a clear indication of market sentiment.
