Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often incorporating information and analysis not immediately available to traditional sportsbooks. While sportsbooks set initial lines based on team statistics and expert opinions, this market allows traders to adjust probabilities as new information emerges. Discrepancies can arise due to differing levels of information access, analytical approaches, or simply variations in opinion among market participants and sportsbook analysts. It’s common to see prediction markets offer more nuanced probabilities than simple win/loss odds found at sportsbooks.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts, converging towards a consensus probability. The market’s price is determined entirely by supply and demand, with traders acting as both market makers and informed speculators. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the collective intelligence of its participants.
