Generally, prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks may incorporate factors like public betting patterns and promotional considerations into their pricing, while this market relies solely on individuals’ willingness to buy or sell based on their beliefs about the outcome. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially as new information emerges or public perception shifts. Analyzing these differences can offer valuable insights into the perceived value and potential mispricings within this market.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe an outcome is likely, the higher the share price will climb. Conversely, if sentiment shifts towards another outcome, the corresponding share price will decrease. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of those trading it.
