Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from initial sportsbook lines. Sportsbooks set odds based on their own models and risk assessment, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. If a significant amount of money is wagered on one outcome, the odds will shift accordingly, potentially signaling a different expectation than traditional sportsbooks. It’s common to see prediction markets outperform traditional odds, especially as more information becomes available and the event draws nearer.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective prediction. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price indicates the market’s assessment of the likelihood of each player winning, and this is constantly updated based on trading activity. The platform uses a fee structure to incentivize accurate predictions and discourage manipulation.
