Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often differing from initial sportsbook offerings. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and ensure profit, while this market allows traders to express their own probabilities. If sportsbook odds heavily favor one competitor, this market might show a more nuanced view if traders believe the matchup is closer than implied. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information access or simply varying interpretations of the same data. Examining these differences can reveal valuable insights into public perception and potential value opportunities.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price reflects the collective assessment of all traders participating in the market. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds are constantly adjusting to new information and changing sentiment.
