Prediction markets and sportsbooks price outcomes differently because they serve different audiences and operate under different constraints. Sportsbooks set odds to balance their book and manage risk, often incorporating a margin. Prediction markets, by contrast, rely on traders' direct financial incentives to price events accurately—there is no house margin, only the spread between bid and ask. This can make prediction markets more efficient at discovering true probability, especially when traders have strong information or conviction. Comparing the two reveals where professional bettors and casual traders diverge in their views.
