Prediction market odds, like those found on Kalshi and Predict, often reflect a 'wisdom of the crowd' that can differ from traditional sportsbook lines. Sportsbooks set odds based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while prediction markets allow anyone to trade on their beliefs, potentially leading to more accurate probabilities. This market’s implied probabilities may diverge from sportsbooks due to differing information sources, risk assessments, or simply the collective insight of market participants. It's common to see discrepancies, especially before significant events or when new information emerges.
Kalshi and Predict can show different implied probabilities for the same outcome because of liquidity, fee structure, participant mix, and how each venue defines the contract. Prices on Kalshi and Predict can differ for several reasons. Kalshi has a more established user base and different trading dynamics, which can influence price discovery. Additionally, the volume traded on each platform—currently $102,811 overall—isn't evenly distributed, leading to potential price discrepancies. Different market makers and traders on each platform may also have varying opinions on the likely outcome of the Yale vs Cornell game, contributing to the observed differences in pricing. These factors combine to create distinct, yet related, markets for the same event.
