Typically, prediction market odds offer a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks often incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, while this market aims to reflect the true probabilities as assessed by traders. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially as new information emerges or public sentiment shifts. While sportsbooks may initially set odds based on expert analysis, this market dynamically adjusts based on the collective wisdom of its participants. Comparing the two can reveal interesting insights into public perception and potential value opportunities.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice-versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This creates a dynamic and responsive market that reflects the collective intelligence of the crowd. The current price reflects the aggregated assessment of all traders participating in this market.
