Prediction markets and sportsbooks price outcomes using different mechanisms. Sportsbooks set lines to balance liability and extract a margin; prediction markets let traders set prices through supply and demand. This market's odds reflect what traders believe will happen, often incorporating real-time information faster than traditional sportsbooks adjust. Comparing the two can reveal sharp consensus or highlight where public perception diverges from expert opinion, making prediction markets a useful reference point for serious bettors and analysts.
Polymarket and Kalshi can show different implied probabilities for the same outcome because of liquidity, fee structure, participant mix, and how each venue defines the contract. Each platform attracts different trader demographics, liquidity pools, and fee structures, all of which influence pricing. Polymarket and Kalshi may also enforce distinct rules around order types, settlement timing, or market halts. Temporary imbalances in buy and sell pressure on one venue can create a spread between platforms. These differences typically narrow as informed traders arbitrage the gap, but they can persist if regulatory constraints or withdrawal friction limit cross-platform trading.
