Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds due to varying information and incentives. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and profit margins, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. If a significant discrepancy exists, arbitrage opportunities may arise, where traders can profit by betting on both the prediction market and a sportsbook. It’s common to see prediction markets move faster to incorporate new information than traditional betting markets, especially regarding player form or injury updates.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate, the market price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the event’s likelihood. Higher demand for shares in a particular player will drive up the price, indicating increased confidence in their victory, while selling pressure will lower the price.
