Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish initial lines based on their own analysis, aiming to balance action on both sides, while this market’s odds are driven by traders who are incentivized to accurately forecast the result. These differences can arise due to varying levels of information, biases, or simply different interpretations of the players’ abilities. It's common to see prediction markets incorporate new information more quickly than traditional sportsbooks, leading to shifts in probabilities as the event approaches.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular player, the price increases, reflecting growing confidence in their chances of winning. Conversely, selling pressure decreases the price, indicating decreasing confidence. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of all participants.
