Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market aggregates the views of many individuals with varying levels of knowledge. It's common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before a significant amount of trading occurs. These differences can arise from differing information, biases, or simply the dynamics of how each type of market operates. Examining both can provide a more comprehensive understanding of the expected outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each player winning. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome, as perceived by the market participants. As more traders buy shares in a particular player, the price increases, reflecting a higher implied probability of victory. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is solely determined by supply and demand within Polymarket, and there's no external influence on the pricing process.
