Prediction market odds often reflect a different kind of wisdom than those found at sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. It's common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before significant events or when new information emerges. Generally, prediction markets can be more accurate than traditional polls or expert opinions, as they incentivize participants to express their true beliefs. However, sportsbooks may offer more competitive pricing on certain outcomes.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. As more shares are purchased for a specific player, the price of those shares increases, reflecting a higher implied probability of victory. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price movements are driven by supply and demand, with traders adjusting their positions based on new information or changes in sentiment. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of all participants.
