Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market aggregates the beliefs of many individual traders. If a significant number of informed bettors believe a sportsbook has mispriced an outcome, they can express that view in this market, causing the odds to diverge. It's common to see discrepancies, especially before major events or when new information emerges, as traders incorporate diverse perspectives into their assessments.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice-versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds constantly adapt to new information and changing sentiment. The current volume indicates the level of interest and confidence in each possible result.
