Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often aligning with—but sometimes diverging from—sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set initial lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market aggregates the opinions of many individual traders. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook has mispriced an outcome, they can create price discrepancies. It's common to see prediction markets move faster to incorporate new information or react to breaking news than traditional sportsbooks.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in each outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice-versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds continuously adapt to new information and changing sentiment among traders.
