Generally, prediction market odds often reflect a 'wisdom of the crowd' that can differ from traditional sportsbook lines. Sportsbooks set initial odds based on their own analysis, incorporating factors like team statistics and expert opinions. This market, however, allows anyone to trade and express their beliefs, potentially leading to odds that more accurately forecast the outcome as new information becomes available. Discrepancies can arise due to differing levels of information access, biases, or simply the diverse perspectives represented in the prediction market compared to the more limited group setting odds at sportsbooks.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in a particular outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment. The market's efficiency depends on the volume of trading and the information available to participants. Higher volume generally indicates greater confidence in the price as a true reflection of the event's likelihood.
