Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring a profit margin, while this market allows traders to directly assess probabilities. This can lead to differences in implied probabilities, especially when there's strong public sentiment or information asymmetry. It’s common to see this market price in factors that sportsbooks might overlook or undervalue, resulting in odds that diverge from those offered elsewhere. Examining these differences can reveal valuable insights into market expectations.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous exchange mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of each player winning. As more traders participate and express their views, the price adjusts to reflect the collective wisdom of the crowd. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand for shares, meaning it's a purely market-driven valuation of the event’s potential outcomes. This creates a dynamic pricing environment that can react quickly to new information.
