Prediction market odds often differ from those offered by traditional sportsbooks, reflecting the wisdom of the crowd versus the assessments of professional oddsmakers. Sportsbooks set initial lines to balance their risk, while this market allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome, potentially leading to more accurate probabilities as new information emerges. Discrepancies can arise due to differing opinions, access to information, or biases present in each system. It’s common to see prediction markets react more quickly to breaking news or shifts in public sentiment than sportsbooks.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the market. The platform uses a constant product market maker model, meaning the product of the shares representing each possible outcome remains constant, ensuring there's always a market for both sides of the bet.

Significant shifts in betting volume, indicating a large influx of traders with a strong conviction, would also likely cause movement in the market price.
