Prediction market odds often reflect a different kind of wisdom than sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market represents the collective prediction of informed traders. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially when a significant amount of information isn’t widely available or when there’s strong disagreement about the likely outcome. If there's a substantial difference, it could indicate that the market believes the sportsbook is mispricing the event, or vice versa. Examining these differences can provide valuable insights.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more shares are traded, the price adjusts to reflect the aggregated sentiment of all participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s depth and volume indicate the level of confidence and interest in each possible result, providing a dynamic assessment of the event’s potential.
