Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their odds based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market relies on the incentives of traders who are financially motivated to accurately predict the outcome. It’s common to see discrepancies between the two, especially before significant events or when new information emerges. Examining these differences can provide valuable insights into public perception and potential value bets. However, it's important to remember that both sources have their own strengths and weaknesses.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price adjusts to reflect the evolving consensus. The current top outcome, as indicated by the highest share price, is the one most traders believe will happen. The market’s efficiency depends on the number of participants and the volume of trading activity.
