Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market aggregates the views of many individuals. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply the dynamics of how each venue operates. It's common to see prediction markets move independently of sportsbook lines, especially as new information emerges or public sentiment shifts.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price fluctuates based on supply and demand; if more people believe Matilde Jorge will win, the price of shares representing her victory will increase. Conversely, increased support for Anastasia Gasanova will drive up the price of her shares.
