Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish initial lines based on their own analysis, aiming to balance action on both sides. This market, however, allows individuals to express their own beliefs, and the resulting odds can diverge from sportsbook lines as new information emerges or public opinion shifts. It's common to see prediction markets incorporate information faster than traditional sources, leading to potentially different probabilities assigned to each outcome compared to those offered by sportsbooks.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting a growing belief in its likelihood. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is entirely driven by supply and demand, meaning the collective judgment of traders determines the odds. This dynamic pricing ensures the market remains responsive to new information and changing sentiment.
