Prediction market odds often differ from traditional sportsbook odds, as they represent the wisdom of the crowd rather than a bookmaker’s assessment. Sportsbooks set lines to balance their risk and ensure profit, while this market allows anyone to express their belief about the probability of an outcome. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply a larger and more diverse pool of participants contributing to the prediction market. It's common to see prediction markets more accurately reflect true probabilities, especially as an event approaches.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing different outcomes. The price of each share reflects the market’s collective belief about the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to incorporate new information and perspectives. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand within Polymarket, and isn’t influenced by external factors or other prediction venues.
