Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring profit regardless of the outcome. This market, however, represents the collective wisdom of traders who are incentivized to accurately predict the result. As a result, the implied probabilities in this market may differ from sportsbook odds, potentially offering value to informed bettors who can identify discrepancies. It's important to remember that both represent probabilities, but are derived through different mechanisms.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of these shares directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more shares purchased for a particular outcome, the higher its price rises, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market accurately reflects the collective intelligence of all participants. The current price movements indicate where traders believe the most value lies in predicting the result of the match.
