Prediction market odds often reflect a different kind of wisdom than sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market aggregates the beliefs of a diverse group of traders. This can lead to discrepancies, as prediction markets are incentivized to accurately forecast the outcome, not necessarily to maximize profit. If a significant difference exists, it might indicate that the crowd perceives information differently than the sportsbook, or that one venue has a more informed set of participants. It’s valuable to compare both to form a well-rounded view.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective wisdom of the crowd. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market continuously updates its forecast based on new information and changing sentiment. The current price reflects the aggregated assessment of all traders on Polymarket.
