Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, incorporating a profit margin. This market, however, is driven by individuals freely trading and expressing their beliefs about the outcome. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook is mispricing the probability of a certain result, they can take a position that pushes the prediction market odds in a different direction. It’s common to see discrepancies, especially before significant events or breaking news.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, the price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market price reflects the collective judgment of all participants, creating a dynamic and real-time assessment of the event's likelihood. This contrasts with fixed-odds betting where prices are set by a bookmaker and remain constant until the event concludes.
