Often, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd and can differ from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set their lines based on their own models and to balance action, while this market is driven by individuals freely trading based on their own information and analysis. If a significant number of people believe a sportsbook is mispricing a player's chances, they can express that view by trading on Polymarket, potentially causing the odds to diverge. This can present opportunities for informed traders to capitalize on discrepancies between the two.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. The price of each share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders buy shares in a particular player, the price of those shares increases, indicating growing confidence in their chances of winning. Conversely, selling pressure drives prices down. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds are constantly updated based on the collective intelligence of the traders.
