Typically, prediction market odds reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, often differing from initial sportsbook lines. Sportsbooks set odds based on their own models and need to account for profit margins, while this market is driven purely by traders’ beliefs. As more information becomes available and bettors trade, the odds on Polymarket may converge or diverge from sportsbook odds, potentially offering value for informed bettors who identify discrepancies. It’s common to see prediction markets outperform traditional odds-makers, especially closer to the event.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As traders exchange shares, the price adjusts, providing a dynamic assessment of the likelihood of each player winning the match. The more shares bought for a particular outcome, the higher its price climbs, indicating growing confidence in that result.
