Typically, prediction market odds reflect the wisdom of the crowd, often differing from initial sportsbook offerings. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market allows anyone to express their belief about the outcome. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook’s odds are inaccurate, the prediction market will adjust accordingly. This can lead to prediction market prices being more accurate, especially as the event approaches and more information becomes available. It’s common to see discrepancies, but these often narrow as event day nears.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who buy shares in a particular outcome, the higher its price will climb, indicating increased confidence. Conversely, selling pressure will lower the price. The market dynamically adjusts to reflect new information and changing opinions, creating a real-time probability assessment of the Sun vs Hou match.
