Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, potentially offering a different perspective than traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set their lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, but may also incorporate a profit margin or be influenced by public betting patterns. This market allows individuals to express their own informed opinions, which can lead to odds that diverge from those offered by sportsbooks, especially as new information emerges. It’s common to see differences in probabilities, particularly for events with high uncertainty or where public perception differs from underlying fundamentals.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing different outcomes. The price of each share reflects the market’s assessment of the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective belief of the crowd. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price movements are driven by supply and demand – if many traders believe an outcome is likely, they will buy shares, driving up the price, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the most up-to-date information available.
