Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of traders, potentially differing from those set by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines based on statistical models and expert analysis, while this market is driven by individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs. This can lead to discrepancies, especially when public sentiment strongly diverges from the sportsbook’s initial assessment. It’s common to see prediction markets react more quickly to new information or changing circumstances than sportsbooks, as traders continuously update their positions.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous exchange mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing different outcomes. The price of each share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice-versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the most up-to-date collective assessment of the event’s likelihood. The current volume traded provides insight into the level of conviction behind each possible result.
