Generally, prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially incorporating information and analysis not fully captured by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbook odds are typically set by professional oddsmakers, while this market is driven by the collective predictions of individual traders. Discrepancies can arise due to differing opinions, access to information, or biases. It’s common to see prediction markets move more quickly to incorporate new information, especially in response to breaking news or unexpected developments related to the players involved. Comparing the two can offer a broader perspective on the likely outcome.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of each share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a specific outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand among traders on Polymarket, and the platform facilitates the matching of buy and sell orders to establish a fair market price for the event.
