Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of bettors, potentially differing from those set by traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines based on their own modeling and aim to balance action on both sides, while this market allows anyone to express their view. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply variations in opinion. Comparing these odds to those offered by sportsbooks can reveal whether the crowd believes there's value in a particular outcome, or if the sportsbook is over or underestimating a potential result.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous trading mechanism where users buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market's price is determined entirely by supply and demand, meaning the collective actions of traders dictate the odds. This dynamic pricing allows for real-time adjustments based on new information and changing sentiment.
