Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, incorporating a profit margin. This market, however, is driven by individuals willing to put their capital behind their beliefs. If a significant number of people believe an outcome is more likely than a sportsbook suggests, the prediction market odds will adjust accordingly. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information, biases, or simply varying levels of expertise among participants.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more people buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, and vice versa. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The current price reflects the collective assessment of all traders on the platform, creating a dynamic and real-time estimate of the event's likelihood. The market's efficiency depends on active participation and informed trading.
