Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks set lines to balance action and incorporate a profit margin, while this market relies on the collective wisdom of traders. If a significant number of traders believe a sportsbook is mispricing an outcome, they can create an arbitrage opportunity by betting on Polymarket. This can lead to prediction market odds diverging from sportsbook odds, especially as new information becomes available or public sentiment shifts. It’s a fascinating comparison to see how different forms of forecasting align.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism. Traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a specific outcome. As more shares are purchased for a particular outcome, the price of those shares increases, reflecting a higher implied probability. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The price movements are driven entirely by supply and demand within the market, with traders adjusting their positions based on their own analysis and information. This dynamic pricing ensures the market reflects the most up-to-date collective assessment of the event’s potential results.
