Prediction market odds often reflect a different set of information and incentives compared to traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks typically set odds to maximize profit, incorporating a margin for themselves, while this market represents the aggregated beliefs of informed traders. As a result, you may find that the probabilities implied by this market diverge from those offered by sportsbooks, especially when there is significant public interest or specialized knowledge influencing trading activity. It's common to see differences in perceived probabilities, particularly as the event approaches.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe an outcome is likely, the higher the price of its shares will rise, and vice-versa. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of participants, constantly updating as new information emerges. The current trading volume indicates the level of interest and conviction surrounding the event.
