Generally, prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd effect, potentially differing from traditional sportsbook odds. Sportsbooks set lines based on their own models and aim to balance action on both sides, incorporating a profit margin. This market, however, is driven by individuals who are incentivized to accurately predict the outcome, leading to potentially more informed pricing. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information access, biases, or simply the dynamic nature of both markets. It’s important to compare and contrast to identify potential value in either venue.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The more traders who believe an outcome is likely, the higher the share price will climb, and vice versa. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market reflects the collective intelligence of those trading it, offering a unique perspective on the potential result of the Kawagishi vs Nagata match.
