Generally, prediction market odds often reflect a wisdom-of-the-crowd perspective, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks establish lines to balance action on both sides, incorporating a profit margin, while this market aggregates the beliefs of informed traders. If a significant discrepancy exists, arbitrage opportunities may arise, where traders can profit by simultaneously betting on both platforms. However, it’s important to remember that prediction markets are forward-looking and can incorporate information not yet reflected in sportsbook odds.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism, where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring, as perceived by the market participants. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate and new information becomes available, the price fluctuates, reflecting the collective intelligence of the crowd. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds are constantly updated and responsive to changing conditions.
