Often, prediction market odds reflect a different perspective than those found at traditional sportsbooks. Sportsbooks incorporate a 'vig' or commission into their odds, ensuring profit regardless of the outcome, and may be influenced by promotional considerations. This market, however, is driven purely by the collective wisdom of traders who are incentivized to accurately predict the result. Discrepancies can arise due to differing information sources, analytical approaches, or simply varying levels of confidence in a particular outcome. It’s common to see prediction markets offer more competitive odds, especially when there’s significant public interest.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the likelihood of each outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the probability of that outcome occurring. As more traders buy shares in a particular outcome, its price increases, reflecting growing confidence. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. The market’s price is determined entirely by supply and demand; there is no central price setter. This dynamic pricing allows the market to quickly incorporate new information and adjust probabilities accordingly.
