Prediction market odds often reflect the collective wisdom of a diverse group of forecasters, potentially differing from sportsbook odds which may be influenced by factors like house bias or public perception. Generally, prediction markets tend to be more accurate than traditional polls or expert opinions, and can sometimes offer different probabilities than those found at sportsbooks. It's important to remember that both represent probabilities of an outcome, but are derived through distinct mechanisms. Examining the differences can provide a broader understanding of potential event outcomes.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the event's likelihood. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds are constantly updated based on new information and changing sentiment among participants.
