Generally, prediction market odds often reflect a 'wisdom of the crowd' perspective, potentially differing from those set by sportsbooks. Sportsbooks incorporate a profit margin into their odds, while this market allows traders to directly assess probabilities. If a significant discrepancy exists between prediction market prices and sportsbook odds, it might indicate that the market believes the sportsbook is mispricing the event. However, sportsbooks have access to different information and expertise, so differences aren't always indicative of a mispricing.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the outcome. The price of a share directly reflects the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more traders participate, the price adjusts to reflect the collective assessment of the event's likelihood. This dynamic pricing ensures that the market odds are constantly updated based on the latest information and sentiment. The market’s price is determined solely by supply and demand for shares on Polymarket.
