Prediction market odds often reflect the wisdom of the crowd, potentially differing from initial sportsbook lines. Sportsbooks set their odds based on statistical models and expert analysis, but may be subject to biases or limitations. This market allows anyone to participate in setting the probabilities, potentially leading to more accurate predictions as new information becomes available. It's common to see prediction markets react quickly to breaking news or changes in player form, while sportsbook odds may adjust more slowly. Comparing the two can offer valuable insights into public perception and potential value.
On Polymarket, this market is priced through a continuous auction mechanism where traders buy and sell shares representing their belief in the probability of a particular outcome. The price of a share directly corresponds to the implied probability of that outcome occurring. On Polymarket, prices reflect that venue's order book, liquidity, and how traders price the outcome right now. As more people buy shares in a particular player, the price increases, reflecting a growing belief in their chances of winning. Conversely, selling pressure lowers the price, indicating decreasing confidence. The market efficiently aggregates information from all participants, resulting in a dynamic and real-time assessment of the likely winner.
